Bioshock: The Movie

10 05 2008

We all know that movies based off of games tend to be the bane of a game developers’ existences. If you have ever seen a movie by Uwe Boll or have even heard of him, you have discovered that he’s perpetuating the kind of crap known as “bad movies”. Thankfully, he’s not getting his grubby hands on the properties of World of Warcraft, and the newly announced Bioshock adaptation. The director, Gore Verbinski, is no stranger to horror and the sea. He was the maker of such films like the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and the US version of The Ring.

In most circumstances, this could be a bad idea putting him on the project, but he seems to have a good amount of knowledge about Bioshock and video games in general, and he is also working on a game that he believes could be potentially awesome. He seems like a guy that wouldn’t butcher the movie and that would pay attention to the fans of the game and listen to their ideas, which is cool. I thought that the first couple Pirates films that he made were really good and watching them again, some of the underwater stuff in The Curse of the Black Pearl reminded me of Bioshock. Plus, Disney won’t be looking over him to make sure that this movie is family-friendly, because he said that he was prepared to make this movie rated R. I don’t think that “prepared” will necessarily cut it, but he believes that the “graphic nature of the story is smarter than that” which is totally true to me. However, I would like to see some violence with the “Andrew Ryan scene”.

When I think “huge director, huge game”, I think “Halo”. Luckily, what happened with the Halo movie will most likely not happen with this, because Gore said that they purposely set up these arrangements with out that mess happening (and if you guys don’t remember, the Halo film, directed by Peter Jackson was mysteriously canned for a while back in 2006). The official guys didn’t send out any casting ideas, but heres who I want to play certain roles: Gary Oldman as Atlas and Josh Brolin as the unnamed character, who desperately needs a name for the movie. I can’t think of anyone who could play a good Andrew Ryan at this time, but I’m sure that whoever the casting director will pick a fitting one. Let’s just hope it isn’t Steven Seagal.
